Guingouin saluting de Gaulle at Limoges on 4 March 1945. On this occasion de Gaulle, standing on the balcony of the city hall, addressed the crowd with, "Limoges, capital of the Resistance", in recognition of the sacrifices made in the area.

Colonel Guingouin wins friends among the Limousin country dwellers. All of them know him and all of them hold him in high regard.
On the 13th March 1943, the "Francs-Tireurs" under Guingouin's command destroyed the rail bridge at Bussy-Varache on the Limoges-Ussel line.

In recognition of his role in the liberation of the city, Guingouin was voted Mayor of Limoges in 1945. He remained in the position until 1947.
After 39 years in existence, the College of Eymoutiers took on the name of George Guingouin. The official renaming ceremony took place on September 25, 1998 with the commemorative plaque being unveiled by Guingouin himself.
Guingouin makes a dedication to the College, along with the Vice-chancellor of the Academy of Limoges. The dedication is in the form of a book entitled "Lo Grand", which recalls Guingouin's action in the Resistance
 
 
As the "Madman of the Woods", Guinguoin's first underground activities were publishing and printing of leaflets which were distributed among the people of the Limousin.
On the 6th of February 2005, Colonel Georges Guingouin was promoted to the rank of Commander in Légion d'Honneur. The ceremony took place near Troyes.
